I was able to catch one of the Ice Nine Kills/Spiritbox co-headlining shows in Luxembourg, on June 2nd 2022. Here's what went down.
The first band to go on stage was InVisions. I wasn’t familiar with them so they were a real revelation to me. Upon my arrival at the venue, I was immediately surprised to see it almost at capacity, and people having arrived early to support the band. The boys got on stage with a great energy and their joy to be there was contagious. They won me and the crowd alike over from the first song! Music-wise, I really appreciated the mix of clean passages and harder sounds, which allowed the crowd to mosh and even form a wall of death. InVisions managed to warm the audience up, not always an easy task for an opening act.
The second band of the evening was the one I was most eager to see: Spiritbox. I wasn’t disappointed at all; the band sounded great throughout the show, and vocalist Courtney LaPlante impressed me immensely with her vocal abilities and charisma on stage. Special shoutout to Zev Rose, the band’s drummer, who has an amazing precision and a very impressive beat. The setlist was very well crafted, blending nicely older and newer material, both calmer and fiercer songs. This allowed us, during the 40-minute set, to discover and appreciate all the different facets of Spiritbox.
The final group for the evening was Ice Nine Kills. To be completely honest, I was very apprehensive of them; it’s not a band that personally listen to, and consequently had a hard time to adapt to their theatrical universe. This is exactly what we got live, and to my surprise, I really liked them. INK didn’t half-ass anything at all; between masks, costumes, actors, murders on stage, the projector that played short films, the lightshow… It’s a real performance in every sense, through and through. I got really caught up and had a great time!
