Gotta love certain coincidences. Like planning a trip to Berlin for mid May, and the day after booking your tickets, Satanic Surfers announcing a show at Cassiopeia while you're in town. It would be rude to say "no", right? It was later announced that Straightline from Munich would be added to the lineup, so yours truly had one more reason to be early in the venue.

DAMNIAM was up first. Their upbeat, melodic punk rock unfortunately wasn't enough to draw more people inside their premises. Energetic and pleasant, although musically not really my cup of tea, they put on a lovely show. (6)

By the time Straightline got on stage, more people had gathered and had made their way towards the front. The band released a brilliant album earlier this year, so I was really looking forward to catching them again & hearing the new tunes. The second the guys started jumping, I knew we were in for a good time. Their performance was tight and on point, as they entwined their melodies with the more in-your-face parts - and in retrospect, that more aggressive drumming worked to their advantage too. (8)

The last time they were in town, Satanic Surfers played for a bigger crowd at Astra next door. You can't possibly fathom what happened in a packed smaller room from the very first note. It was hard not to smile with all the energy radiating. OK, alcohol might have helped a bit there. Rodrigo Alfaro proved once again that he's one of the best frontmen in this scene, his voice only getting more vibrant over time. The setlist didn't particularly change from the last time I saw them, which I personally didn't mind at all. People sang along to most lyrics and engaged into some lovely dives, as did Rodrigo in the end. An hour and two encores later, the entire venue was a big, sweaty mess. And much like last time, the show went straight to my yearlist. (10)
